La Guera,
Refugee Camps, March 31st 2016
We are volunteers and aid workers from
different associations, organizations and nationalities visiting the Sahrawi refugee
camps in the Algerian desert.
After so many years of activity in the defense
of self-determination and independence of the Saharawi people and in
fundraising for humanitarian purposes in their favor, we have seen the possibility
of a return to arms.
Many of them are young people who, tired of
not seeing and not having chances for their future, in the absence of response
from the international diplomacy, push forward so that the Saharawi Republic will
consider concluded the dialogue for the implementation of the referendum.
The actions undertaken by Morocco during the
visit of UN Secretary Ban Ki Moon, such as: detention for crimes of opinion,
arbitrary killing in the liberated territory, the expulsion of civil and
administrative component of the UN mission “MINURSO” from the occupied
territories, the increase number of troops along the wall, are causing
escalations which, if not arrested, will make the return of conflict very
likely.
Therefore we consider essential that the
Security Council after the statements from its Secretary of March the First,
will bring in the upcoming days practical solutions for the implementation of
the referendum as well as the agreements of peace of 1991.
It is necessary to prevent the tragic
consequences for the people of the entire region and to avoid the creation a further outbreak in
the Mediterranean which is being already heavily affected by the current
crisis, wars and terrorism.
Therefore we ask:
1) Respect for the right to self-determination
of the Saharawi people through a referendum to be held in the current year
2) The procedure for obtaining the return of
the “MINURSO” mission with all its components in the occupied territories and
the extension of its mandate to monitor the respect of human rights, that are constantly violated as
frequently noted by Amnesty International dossier and R.Kennedy Foundation.
3) The release of the thirteen Saharawi
prisoners of Gdem Izik on hunger strike for the rights denied to all the
Saharawi political prisoners. First people who signed:
Nadia Conti,
Massimiliano Caligara, Francesca Materozzi, Paolo Mazzinghi, Eugenio Mastrogiacomo, Giovanni Militello, Elena Bonvissuto, Grazia
Pinna, Matteo Corona, Franco Naldi,
